On Friday morning, after realizing the kids didn't have enough experience with triple beam balances we decided to explore what happens to gum's mass after chewing it..... Each kid came up with an hypothesis, or an educated guess. Then we discussed the variables, materials needed, and procedure we should follow in our investigation. This was an excellent review of the scientific method, as well as an exercise using triple beam balances. After we recorded our observations and analyzed our results, we learned about reading nutritional labels to suggest an explanation for what happened. Each child evaluated their own hypothesis as they drew their conclusion. Science fair is due May 2nd. In the past month we have designed multiple experiments and reviewed the scientific method several times. At this point your child should be conducting his/her experiment and analyzing results. The science fair booklet has a step by step process they should follow to ensure success on this project.
