Now that we know all about properties of matter, we could use that knowledge to solve our scientific problem. The students were presented with a mixture of salt, sand, pebbles, iron washers, cork bits, and small Aluminum pieces. The goal of this investigation was to separate the mixture completely to the original ingredients using what they know about their properties. They had to design and execute their procedure using what was available in class. For example using a strainer to separate by size, using a magnet to attract iron containing washers, using buoyancy to separate items that are less dense than water (cork, and Aluminum), and last using solubility to separate sand and salt.
