In the spirit of winter and the holiday season, we made snowflakes yesterday while learning all about saturated and supersaturated solutions. We dissolved Borax (solute) in very hot water (solvent) until we could clearly see that the Borax could not dissolve anymore. Then we suspended our snowflakes (that we have made of pipe cleaners ahead of time) in this supersaturated solution. While the water evaporated, the crystals were left behind and added some special effects to our creation. In the same manner rock candy can be made at home during the holiday break (the following link has a simple recipe) This might be a great way to spend quality time with your child, while reviewing science vocabulary and concepts ♥
