Class of 2011 - Congratulation!!!!!!!!!!

I am so proud of all of your accomplishments this year. You have been a great class; passionate about your issues, caring, funny, you all worked hard, and were committed to succeeding. I have seen you grow and blossom throughout the year, especially during Exhibition. This moment is bitter sweet; I realize that you are more than ready to move on and embark on your journey to middle school, but at the same time I am having a very hard time saying goodbye. Please remember that I will always be a click away, happy to hear all about your day, successes, and adventures.

Dear Parents, I appreciate all that you have done this year to make my job easier. Your support, smiles and trust were with me every day and I couldn’t have done it without you. You have raised great kids, and I know that you’ll see them grow and head towards great things.

Exhibition Talk

We are currently delving into WHO WE ARE. We talked about the differences between beliefs and values and identified the values that are most important to us as individuals as well as a class. Honesty, Respect and Self-Control were the values that were most important to us as a class. This is a very important time for our class as we spend valuable time discussing different things.

We talked about what exhibition is and what it isn't, and established norms. Here are just few we would like to share:
  • Exhibition is NOT a project.
  • Exhibition is NOT a competition.
  • Exhibition is student driven.
  • Exhibition is a show case, the students are the jewels.
  • This Exhibition is an inquiry into who we are.
  • I (Mrs. Gilboa) doesn't know what we are doing, and were we are going, but will guide us through the process.
  • As we "peel the onion" and find out who we are, we should show our RESPECT to one another and never laugh or ridicule a friend for who they are.
  • We want to feel comfortable to expose and talk.
  • We want to find our gifts and talents.
  • We want to find our strengths and weakness.

Chew on This...

On Friday morning, after realizing the kids didn't have enough experience with triple beam balances we decided to explore what happens to gum's mass after chewing it..... Each kid came up with an hypothesis, or an educated guess. Then we discussed the variables, materials needed, and procedure we should follow in our investigation. This was an excellent review of the scientific method, as well as an exercise using triple beam balances. After we recorded our observations and analyzed our results, we learned about reading nutritional labels to suggest an explanation for what happened. Each child evaluated their own hypothesis as they drew their conclusion.

Science fair is due May 2nd. In the past month we have designed multiple experiments and reviewed the scientific method several times. At this point your child should be conducting his/her experiment and analyzing results. The science fair booklet has a step by step process they should follow to ensure success on this project.

Field Day

What a great Field day!!! Together with our school team; Mrs. Saenz Class, and Mrs Rawson Class, we won 1st place. I am most proud of our kids for their team work and cooperation, but most of all for how they came together as a community and supported each other as well as other teams in school while having FUN.

Thanks for all the healthy snacks you provided, and big thanks for all the parents that came, cheered, supported the kids and satisfied every need along the way.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum

Today we visited the retired drilling rig, Ocean Star, in Galveston.
The museum featured many models and interactive displays that helped us understand the story of offshore oil and gas seismic technology. We were able to walk out onto the drill floor of the rig as well as see exploration platforms, actual drill bits and remotely operated vehicles. I encourage you to visit the museum with your family and learn more about this petroleum industry. Big Thanks to our wonderful chaperons, Alex's mom, Will's mom, and Nadia's mom for helping me ensure safety.
